After working with hundreds of women over the past decade, I’ve heard the same limiting beliefs come up again and again.
These wardrobe lies keep you stuck in closet chaos. They’re the reason getting dressed feels overwhelming instead of empowering. And they’re definitely why you’re not showing up as confidently as you could.
Today, I’m breaking down the most common style myths women tell themselves—and sharing the truth that will actually set you free.
Style Myth #1: You Must Choose Between Style and Comfort
- The Lie: Looking good means suffering in uncomfortable clothes.
- The Truth: Style and comfort aren’t opposites—they actually work beautifully together.
There’s a whole range of clothing between stilettos and sweatpants. Some of my favorite pieces are cozy cardigans, wide-leg denim, and colorful sneakers.
Here’s what I’ve learned: When you’re comfortable in your clothes, you show up differently. You’re more present, more confident, and more authentically yourself.
Pro Tip: Look for soft fabrics like ponte, cashmere, and stretch cotton. These materials give you both polish and comfort.
Style Myth #2: Shopping Should Be a Reward for Weight Loss
- The Lie: You’ll deal with your style after you lose some weight.
- The Truth: You deserve to look good in your clothes right now.
This is one of the most damaging style myths because it implies you’re not worthy right now. And that’s simply not true.
Waiting to feel worthy is like hitting pause on your life. It stifles your growth and keeps you from showing up fully in the present moment.
When you start dressing for the person you are now, you make a powerful promise to yourself: I deserve to look good today.
Secret I’ve Noticed: Most of my clients lose weight after hiring me—not because that was the goal, but because feeling good in their clothes creates positive momentum in other areas of life.
Style Myth #3: I'm Too Old to Wear This
- The Lie: Age determines what you can and can’t wear.
- The Truth: Age should never be the deciding factor in what you wear.
I once styled a 91-year-old woman who told me I made her feel beautiful and seen. I didn’t take away her sparkles, hide her shape, or put her in a shapeless jersey.
If you feel comfortable and confident in what you’re wearing, who cares if someone else thinks it’s “age appropriate”?
Your style should reflect who you are and how you want to show up in the world—at any age.
Style Myth #4: I Have Nothing to Wear
- The Lie: You’re staring at a crowded closet with “nothing to wear.”
- The Truth: You haven’t been wearing most of what you own.
This is the most common wardrobe lie we tell ourselves. The real problem? You’re not sure how to style pieces together to create complete outfits.
Or you’ve fallen into a style rut and wear the same three things on repeat while the rest of your wardrobe collects dust.
Often, a little decluttering and organizing will help you see what you actually own. When you can see your options clearly, getting dressed becomes so much easier.
Try This Exercise:
Pick one item you love but rarely wear. Set a timer for five minutes and see how many different outfits you can build around it. You might be surprised by what’s already hiding in your closet.
Style Myth #5: I Can't Afford to Dress Nicely
- The Lie: Looking stylish requires a high-end luxury wardrobe.
- The Truth: You can’t afford not to invest in your style.
Looking polished doesn’t mean designer labels. It does require investing some money to dress well—but not as much as you think.
When you focus on a few quality pieces, you can create endless combinations. The real issue isn’t lack of funds. It’s that we’re spending money on everyone else but ourselves.
Investing in your personal style isn’t selfish—it’s selfless. When you show up confidently, you serve others better.
Not investing in your style can cost you a promotion, a new opportunity, or the chance to connect with someone who could change your trajectory.
