After working inside hundreds of closets, I’ve discovered one style mistake that keeps showing up again and again.
It’s why your wardrobe doesn’t reflect who you are on the inside. It’s why getting dressed feels like a chore instead of the thrill of wearing something that feels energetically you. And it’s definitely why you’re not getting compliments on your outfit while that other woman in town always seems to.
You’re wasting money on your wardrobe and not really loving most of what you own.
Want to know what that mistake is?
Drumroll please…
You’re shopping for pieces instead of outfits.
Why Item Shopping Is Draining Your Wallet
Yes, item shopping is causing you to lose money each year.
Think about it. A sale email pops up on a Friday afternoon and you’re purchasing something out of boredom that may not be what you need. Or you’re rushing to buy something new for a work presentation or interview just so you have something fresh to wear.
Maybe you’re at the mall with your kids and decide to walk into Madewell to pick up “a little something.”
Sound familiar?
Here’s the problem: When you buy individual pieces without thinking about how they fit into your existing wardrobe, you end up with a closet full of clothes but nothing to wear.
"When you start thinking of your wardrobe in outfits, you become a savvy shopper."

The Simple Exercise That Changes Everything
Here’s what I want you to do instead.
Start with one item in your wardrobe—maybe a blouse you love. Set a five-minute timer and see what you can wear it with.
Pay attention to the thoughts that come up. You might think: “I love this blouse but I’m not wearing it enough because I don’t have the right jeans that make me feel good to wear with it.”
Perfect! Now you have a specific item for your shopping list: a pair of wide-leg jeans in a medium blue color.
What else might work with this blouse? Maybe there’s a skirt already hanging in your closet that you forgot about.
How Outfit Thinking Transforms Your Wardrobe
When you shift from shopping for random pieces to building complete outfits, everything changes.
You Become a Strategic Shopper
Your new purchases go back to things you already own instead of requiring an entirely new set of accessories, shoes, and pants just to make one top work.
You Get Naturally Organized
Your outfits can fit into clear buckets: work looks, weekend casual, and social events. Getting dressed becomes faster and more intentional.
You Save Money
No more buying things you’ll wear once or items that sit in your closet with tags still on because they don’t go with anything.
Start Simple: The Outfit Building Method
You don’t need to overhaul your entire wardrobe overnight. Here’s how to begin:
1. Pick One Favorite Piece
Choose something you already own and love. It could be a blazer, a dress, or a pair of shoes.
2. Set a Timer for 5 Minutes
Give yourself a short, focused block of time to experiment without pressure.
3. Pull Items That Work Together
Don’t worry about having every single piece for the “perfect” outfit. Just start building one complete look and go from there.
4. Make a Specific Shopping List
Instead of “I need new jeans,” write down “wide-leg jeans in medium wash to wear with my cream blouse and camel blazer.”
5. Think in Formulas
From Random Purchases to Intentional Style
The shift from piece shopping to outfit thinking is one of the most powerful changes you can make for your wardrobe and your wallet.
When you know exactly what you need to complete an outfit, shopping becomes purposeful instead of impulsive. You stop accumulating clothes that don’t serve you and start building a wardrobe that actually works for your life.
