Life Transitions Are Like Closet Clean-Outs

Woman organizing wardrobe during life transition with personal style coach guidance

Last week, I filmed a podcast for a community of divorced women. The topic? Rediscovering what looks and feels good after divorce.

It got me thinking about life transitions and how your wardrobe often tells the story of who you’re becoming. Have you ever noticed how major life changes show up in your closet?

You step into a new role at work. You celebrate a milestone birthday. You simply feel yourself changing. Suddenly, the outfits that used to feel like “you” don’t quite fit anymore.

They’re fine. But they don’t match the version of yourself that you’re becoming.

The Clothes We Keep From Our Former Selves

You’re not alone in this. Most of us carry pieces from our “former selves” far longer than we should.

Maybe it’s the sheath dress that was your go-to for presentations during the 2000s. Or the practical “just get me through this season” clothes that stuck around. Perhaps it’s that sweater with the holes you can’t let go of because it’s so cozy.

There’s nothing wrong with keeping these things—for a period of time. But if you’re getting dressed and noticing a disconnect, it may be your style nudging you to catch up with your life.

Why Our Style Feels Different During Transitions

Big changes bring up the same question: Who am I now?

Divorce. A promotion. Leaving your corporate job. Starting a new business or revamping your current one. Becoming an empty nester. Perimenopause.

Each of these life transitions forces us to re-evaluate not just our circumstances, but our identity. And when your identity shifts, your life transitions wardrobe needs to shift too.

A Simple Exercise for Wardrobe Transitions

Ready to align your style with who you’re becoming? Try this two-step exercise:

Step 1: Let Go of One Piece From Your Past

Release something that feels tied to a past version of you. That shirt you never wear? The dress that reminds you of a role you’ve outgrown?

Letting it go is symbolic. You’re making space—physically and emotionally—for what comes next.

Step 2: Add One New Piece That Excites You

Choose something that makes you excited about where you’re headed. Maybe it’s a new pair of chocolate suede boots that make you feel sexy. A blazer in a power color. Or a pair of earrings that make you feel adventurous.

Pay attention to how you feel when you wear the new piece.

Clothing Is Energy

Here’s what I know to be true: Clothing is energy. It should give you a boost, not weigh you down.

Studies show that what we wear directly impacts our confidence and performance—a concept psychologists call enclothed cognition. Style is about embodying the version of you that’s ready to be seen. When your life evolves, your wardrobe deserves to evolve too.

My Personal Transition Story

Perimenopause is my current life transition. It has forced me to re-evaluate my relationships, my business, and my wardrobe.

This past summer, we closed our membership program. We reimagined our service offerings. We adjusted our team’s roles to align better with who we’re becoming.

It’s scary to go through big changes. But it’s scarier to stay stuck.
