If Your Closet Had a Personality, What Would It Say?

Organized closet with spring wardrobe essentials for professional women

Spring is officially here, and you know what that means! Warmer days are just around the corner, and it’s time to think about how your wardrobe is going to support you through the season ahead.

In the fitness world, they say summer bodies are made in winter. The same principle applies to your wardrobe. Spring and summer wardrobes are created by taking small steps now.

Recently, one of our Rise + Style members—a physician working in an administrative position at a hospital—realized she needed to shift away from a wardrobe of black pants and sweaters. She wanted something more elevated and refined for the warmer months ahead.

So where did she begin? In her closet. And that’s exactly where you can start too.

The Closet Personality Exercise

Here’s a question I want you to consider: If your closet had a personality, what would it say?

Think about it for a moment. Is your closet happy and calm, welcoming you inside to a space that’s a source of inspiration and joy? Is it relaxed because everything is organized in a way that makes getting dressed effortless?

Or does it feel cluttered, disorganized, and anxious because there’s too much there? Maybe it’s overwhelmed and frustrated because it’s dusty and dimly lit. Or perhaps it feels so empty that it’s hungry for your attention.

All these feelings—your closet’s personality and your feelings about it—are completely normal.

"The wardrobe you have today should reflect the woman you are NOW, not the woman from 5 years ago."

Quote from Neepa Sikdar about letting go of outdated clothes and building a wardrobe for who you are today

My Closet Confession

I’ll be honest with you. At this present moment, my own closet is dusty and neglected because I haven’t spent the time organizing it. Even as a style professional, I’m not immune to closet chaos.

And here’s what I’ve learned: You can watch all the reels you want of other people organizing closets and wish you had the space, the light, or the budget to create that dream closet. Or you can deal with the one you currently have.

The good news? You can make your own dream closet by giving it the time and attention it needs.

How to Prepare Your Closet for Spring

Ready to transform your closet from overwhelmed to organized? Here’s how to start preparing your spring wardrobe now.

1. Schedule Regular Closet Time

Spend one hour a week (or even one hour a day if you can) organizing your closet. Can’t find the time? Hire someone to do the dusting and deep cleaning for you. Your closet deserves the same attention you’d give to any other important space in your home.

2. Be Honest About Fit and Function

Do a reality check on what actually fits and flatters you right now. Are you holding onto jeans that require you to lose weight? Or keeping larger sizes “just in case”

Remember, the wardrobe you have today should reflect the woman you are now—not the woman from five years ago.

3. Improve Your Lighting

Good lighting is essential for a functional closet. Replace that old light bulb or upgrade the fixture to something that allows you to see the true colors of your clothes. Look for LED bulbs between 3000-4000 Kelvins for the best color rendering.

4. Consider the Cost of Keeping

Think about what each item you won’t let go of is really costing you. Clothes that don’t work for you take up physical space in your wardrobe and mental space in your headspace. Clutter isn’t good for your energy or your morning routine.

5. Release What No Longer Serves You

Your spring wardrobe should make you feel confident and authentic. If something doesn’t support who you are becoming, it’s time to let it go.
